Will This Be Your Best Year Yet?
by Richard Banfield

Last year's New Year's Eve party we were introduced to a game that is supposed to predict the outcome of the year ahead. Each person selects three of six upturned cups, each concealing a collection of household paraphernalia. Items included a coin to represent wealth, an airline ticket stub representing travel, and several other symbolic bits and pieces. It's a little like setting your New Year's resolutions but fate chooses for you. What's a little scary is that almost all the predictions have come true.

If you are reluctant to leave your future in the fate of a teacup, then I highly recommend the Best Year Yet course. Last month I was fortunate enough to have attended the one-day course hosted by Marilyn Edelson. It was a professionally organized and straightforward program without any of the self-help hype that sometimes accompanies personal development courses. The course begins with a review of the previous year's achievements and disappointments. Looking through these review notes, I was surprised at how many things I had managed to get done in a single year, as was everyone else. It seems we are our own biggest critics and sometimes forget the highlights of the past year.

Most appealing is that the course is simple to ensure a fairly quick pace, and yet I felt quite challenged by all the exercises. Within the space of an afternoon, we had established some powerful objectives, altered some paradigms, created tactical plans and enjoyed some of the best coaching money can buy. The program left me feeling optimistic about the year ahead with a realistic roadmap of how I was going to achieve the goals I had set myself.

One of the attendees was a return visitor having completed the course a year ago. It was encouraging to see him reaffirming that he had positively had his Best Year Yet since completing the course. I look forward to attending next year and writing down the highlights of my own best year yet. —Richard Banfield
